Why is flossing so important

Most people do not use dental floss or use it very rarely and are very reluctant to do so because they feel that this tool is rather unnecessary. They think that brushing their teeth with a toothbrush alone gives them a clean feeling in their mouth and that this is sufficient. They feel that the toothbrush can remove food particles thoroughly enough and do not see the need to use dental floss in addition. What most people unfortunately do not know is that 30% of the tooth surface is in the spaces between the teeth. Unfortunately, the toothbrush does not reach these narrow spaces or only insufficiently. Most germs remain there undisturbed, can multiply undisturbed and cause gum inflammation, tooth decay and, in the long term, periodontal disease. Only by using dental floss regularly can you efficiently clean the spaces between your teeth and thus prevent the development of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

How often and when should you use dental floss?

Normally, it is sufficient to use dental floss once a day. The evening is usually the best time to do this, as you have the most time then and your gums and teeth can recover overnight. A common question is whether you should use dental floss before or after brushing. The answer is very controversial, but the most important thing is to use dental floss, ideally once a day. I usually recommend first wetting your teeth with a little toothpaste and then using dental floss. This way the toothpaste can also get into the gaps between your teeth better. After rinsing your mouth, I recommend cleaning your teeth thoroughly with a toothbrush. This way you can be sure that there are no more food particles sticking to your mouth.
