What are wedge-shaped defects?

Wedge-shaped defects can occur due to incorrect brushing, such as by scrubbing the teeth horizontally. This gradually removes tooth substance.

Wedge-shaped loss of tooth substance occurs particularly frequently in the border area between the neck of the tooth (tooth root) and the crown on the outside of the tooth.

When scrubbing horizontally, the bristles crowd together and act like a saw on the gums at the neck of the tooth. The wrong mechanical stress wears away tooth hard substance over time. Wedge-shaped defects mostly occur on incisors and canines as well as on the sides of the molars.

How can you avoid wedge-shaped defects?

Very simple: if you want to avoid such defects, you should pay close attention to the way you brush your teeth. Horizontal scrubbing movements should be avoided at all costs and you should use a suitable soft but nevertheless effective toothbrush. The use of toothpaste that is too aggressive can also cause scratches on the teeth, which gradually grow into deep defects. It is therefore incredibly important to pay attention to the abrasion value, the so-called RDA value, when choosing a toothpaste. Reputable manufacturers communicate the corresponding RDA value on the packaging or on the tube. An RDA value that is too low has very little cleaning power and will not prevent the formation of discoloration, while RDA values ​​that are too high are very dangerous for the tooth structure. An average RDA value between 60 and 90 enables efficient tooth cleaning without damaging the tooth structure.

And what if I have wedge-shaped defects?

Then only the dentist can help: he can repair the defects with composite fillings. But the better solution, if possible, is prevention!
